Choosing the right supplier and product for crowd safety at Firework Events: A Practical Guide by PSSA

Choosing the right supplier and product for crowd safety at Firework Events: A Practical Guide by PSSA

24th October 2023 by Louise Carney

With the celebrations of Firework Night and Diwali fast approaching, ensuring crowd safety at these events is paramount. The Perimeter Security Suppliers Association (PSSA) is dedicated to promoting best practices in crowd management and perimeter protection. On behalf of our members, we offer guidance on choosing the right supplier and the correct product to ensure the safety and security of event attendees.

Barriers at public events, such as firework displays, are not just essential; they are instrumental in managing crowds and ensuring public safety. These barriers help manage and influence the behaviour of crowds, line routes, prevent visitors from climbing temporary structures, relieve overcrowding, and provide physical security.

1. Risk Assessment is Key

When deciding to use barriers and fencing as a crowd management tool, conducting a comprehensive risk assessment is crucial. Various factors, such as the planned use of barriers, layout, ground conditions, weather, and visitor numbers, must be thoroughly evaluated. This risk assessment will guide you in selecting a barrier that mitigates risks rather than exacerbating them.

2. Choose a Reputable Supplier

Choosing a reputable supplier is equally important. A credible supplier ensures that you receive quality, durable products that meet safety regulations and standards. Suppliers who are members of professional bodies like the PSSA, assure a level of quality and reliability, ensuring that the barriers serve their purpose effectively and safely.

3. Selecting the Correct Product

Different events and locations require different types of barriers. Considering the event’s unique aspects, like ground conditions and the presence of underground services, helps in selecting a barrier that is fit for purpose. Ensuring the barriers can withstand various loads, such as wind and crowd pressure, is also vital in maintaining integrity and safety during the event.

4. Installation and Maintenance

Proper installation is crucial for the effectiveness of the barriers. Make sure the supplier provides clear instructions and support in this area. Regular maintenance checks are also necessary to ensure that the barriers remain in optimal condition throughout the event.

By following these guidelines, event organisers can ensure that the celebrations of Firework Night and Diwali unfold with joy and safety. Remember, the right barrier choice and a reliable supplier are central to creating a secure and enjoyable event environment.
