THE 5 MINUTE

INTERVIEW

New PSSA Council member,

MarkWood, under the

spotlight…

Q. You have joined the

PSSA Council as a

representative from

Bristorm, part of the Hill & Smith group. How long

have to been with themand what is your role there?

I started with Hill& Smith in August 2008 as Contracts

Manager looking after Bristorm installation projects.

I’m never likely to forget when I started as my

daughter was born 4 days before I was due to start!!

Since then my role has evolved as the demands from

the business and market changed, I’ve worn many

hats, many at the same time! From January 2018 my

role has been better defined so I am now UK Business

Development manager not only for Bristorm Security

products but also Hill & Smith“off road”barrier and

pedestrian guardrails. So many challenges ahead.

Q. What do you think the biggest opportunities are for

the high security perimeter products sector in the UK

at themoment?

Certainly temporary HVM products are a growing

market, however the issues of rapid and easy

deployment still need solving to some degree. VAW

protection is an area at the forefront of everyone’s

mind, and the chance to develop solutions“outside

the box”has never been more relevant.

Q. What one thing do you think the PSSA could do for

its members which it doesn’t do now?

More of the same. Just bigger!

Q. If you weren’t doing you what you do at themoment,

what would be your dream job?

Selling beer frommy own small bar on a beach

somewhere exotic and hot!

Q. Game of Thrones or Doctor Who?

I don’t watch either, I’ve avoided Doctor Who since I

was a child, the Daleks gave me nightmares! Although

many people have said I have a passing resemblance

to David Tennant! Can’t see it myself.

Q. Your favourite “guilty pleasure”?

Loving“old skool”boys’toys at the moment toy cars,

RC cars and BMXs to name but a few, clearly heading

for a mid-life crisis very soon.

JB Corrie accreditation means four

approved to install ArmaWeave

A fourth company has been accredited to install ArmaWeave, an approved

high-security perimeter fencing systemmanufactured by PSSA member Zaun.

Fellow PSSA member JB Corrie has committed to training its site operatives

in the installation methods for ArmaWeave developed by Zaun over time to

make best use of its unique high-security woven fabric.

Impressed with the versatility of the system, Corries are now installing the

Zaun mesh on several security sites.

With their new accreditation, JB Corrie now brings the number of approved

installers of ArmaWeave to four, alongside expert installers Allen Fencing

Limited, systems integrator Crime & Fire Defence Systems and premier prison

fencing installer Binns Fencing, a Zaun subsidiary.

Corries Contracts Director NortonWelch said:“We are delighted to have

received this accreditation and look forward to working closely with Zaun to

install their security products in the future.”

The company – which has been going more than one hundred years and

is now in the ownership of the fourth generation Corrie family – installs

integrated perimeter protection systems for high security applications and

boasts military bases, utilities, power stations and airports among its clients.

Zaun established the installer scheme after increasing requests from

customers to recommend contractors with suitable installation, quality and

safety standards.

ArmaWeave is produced on the world’s largest steel loom at Zaun’s West

Midlands manufacturing base. It has unique properties that give it distinct

advantages against more traditional welded mesh systems, such as panels

that can be raked to accommodate slopes. Therefore, installers require the

necessary skill sets to set this up.

The wire of the panels has a tensile strength typically more than double

welded panels so special methods are needed for cutting the panels during

installation.

Zaun trained JB Corrie’s installation teams on the properties and tolerances

of ArmaWeave and how it is manufactured. The training is for fencers with

proven experience in high-security fencing work who are sponsored by a

company that can demonstrate its professionalism through membership of a

relevant trade organisation and valid UKAS accredited ISO9001 certification.

The certificate of training is only valid while the individual is working for

the host company. This ensures the trained individuals are working properly

under quality management to install the product.

With its partners, Zaun hopes to increase the adoption of ArmaWeave as the

standard for secure sites of Critical National Infrastructure – such as utilities,

data centres and nuclear sites – while ensuring consistent installation quality.
