An Interview between Transport Security Expo
and
Sean Salmon
, Operations Director,
Allens Total Perimeter Security
Sean, can you start by telling us why you’re
exhibiting at Transport Security Expo?
We’ve been exhibiting at Transport Security
Expo for many years but this year we’re
particularly excited about the show because
of the World of Perimeter Security. Between
ourselves, the show’s organisers and the
Advisory Board, we have come up with
something new, innovative and genuinely
different for the security industry.
To be honest, like many of our partners
in the perimeter security arena, we were
becoming quite tired of security exhibitions
but this is an opportunity to provide what
the industry and its customers, including
government agencies, really need – a total
solution in one area. We’ve been going to
security exhibitions in the UK, the US and the
rest of the world for more than two decades
and this is a real first.
About nine other exhibitors will be joining
us in World of Perimeter Security which will
mean that it pretty much covers our entire
supply chain.
So what can visitors toWorld of Perimeter
Security expect?
That’s the key question – how is it going to
benefit the visitor? in the past, visitors to
security exhibitions had to walk around the hall
looking at different technologies on different
stands trying to piece the widgets together to
make a complete solution. What we’re doing,
and this is the big benefit for the visitor, is
bringing everything together in one area and
providing an escorted tour that will encompass
the complete perimeter security picture.
Take the example of a visitor who may be
responsible for security at a new petroleum
plant – they don’t come along to a show
asking “what’s the best bollard?” or “what’s
the best camera?” – they’re looking for a total
solution for protecting the installation. World
of Perimeter Security will show them exactly
what they need and save them a lot of time.
Is the international dimension of Transport
Security Expo important to you?
Very much so. We’re very impressed with
what the organisers have done this year and
they’ve clearly got a very strong Advisory
Board representing both Government and
industry stakeholders. Together they’ve
done an excellent job in encouraging some
30 international delegations to come to the
show. Each one, whichever country they’re
coming from, will be looking for the kind of
integrated systems thinking that is now being
exhibited for the first time in one place.
The UK is one of the strongest countries
in the world for security – we lead the way
globally. You only have to look at what was
done for the London 2012 Olympics. That
kind of legacy positions the UK as a centre of
security excellence for the rest of the world.
Can you tell us something about Allens
and the areas you work in?
Allens has been involved in the security
sector for over 60 years and we cover
everything from fencing and hostile
vehicle mitigation which includes but is
not limited to road blockers and bollards to
security gates and cameras. But what really
distinguishes us is the way we integrate all
these different technologies to provide a
complete, managed solution for the client
– whether Government agencies or CNI
installations here or abroad.
What advice would you give to any
companies who are currently thinking of
exhibiting at Transport Security Expo?
I’d advise them to move quickly because, as I
understand it, exhibition space is selling
out fast. The show has been running for 13
years and has an excellent track record but
this year it promises to be a particularly
important, high end, security event. So if
you’re involved in the security sector and
you’re serious about engaging with top
level, international decision makers, this is
the show you need to be involved in.
Transport Security Expo is an excellent
example of Government and industry
coming together to tackle the big
security issues with a genuinely joined-up
perspective.

Allens Total Perimeter Security
go to
www.allenstps.comWhat does your
role in the PSSA
involve?
We are an
installer of
Fencing, gates
and associated
products within
a variety of
sectors and we
aim to complete the PSSA installer module, with
the aim of making ABC Fencing a recognised
installer of high security solutions from various
manufacturers, for a variety of end users.
What’s your vision for PSSA over the next
year/ 3 years/ 5 years?
I would like to see PSSA Membership become
the benchmark for customers who are looking
for companies to supply and install high security
perimeter protection and HVM.
Where have you previously worked?
My previous position was Regional Director
of London and the South East for Darfen
Durafencing.
What would people be surprised to learn
about you?
I have a passion for all things Cinema and I
was a Cinema Projectionist for a fewmonths
in 1996. (best job I ever had but worst pay and
worst hours) so had to head back to the fencing
industry.
What’s the first thing you would do if you
were prime minister?
Find a way to alleviate traffic jams by building
more Roads and Railways.
Who would you most like to meet and why?
I have met a few of my idols (mainly Arsenal
Footballers) and always find meeting these type
of people a bit of a disappointment it takes away
the mystery.
What 3 things would you take to a
desert island?
A Helicopter, Helicopter Fuel and a
Helicopter Pilot!
